Maternity Benefits

Definition

Maternity Benefits: A temporary income-replacement program available under Canada’s Employment Insurance (EI) system that provides a portion of a new or expectant mother’s regular earnings while she is away from work for the birth or adoption of her child. The standard option replaces 55% of gross weekly insurable earnings (up to a government-set maximum) for up to 15 consecutive weeks; an extended option is also available at a lower weekly rate for a longer period. Eligibility is tied to having worked a minimum number of insurable hours in the 52-week period before the claim and experiencing a 40% or greater reduction in usual weekly earnings due to pregnancy or childbirth.
