Income Replacement

Definition

Income Replacement (Canadian Insurance) – The money an individual receives from an insurance company—typically under a disability policy, critical-illness policy, employment-insurance (EI) claim, or similar wage-loss benefit—to take the place of the regular wages they no longer earn because of illness, injury, or other covered inability to work. The amount is expressed either as a fixed weekly dollar figure or as a percentage of the person’s pre-disability earnings, subject to the maximums and waiting periods set out in the policy or program.
