Final Average Earnings

Definition

Final Average Earnings (FAE) – The average annual employment income used by an insurer to determine certain disability, life, or pension benefits. In most Canadian policies, FAE is calculated by taking the employee’s highest-paid consecutive years (often the last three or five years before the claim event) and averaging the T4-reported earnings from those years, excluding irregular bonuses or overtime unless the plan document explicitly includes them.
