Benefit Period

Definition

Benefit Period – Canadian insurance: the maximum amount of time—usually stated in weeks, months, or years—during which an insurer will continue paying benefits after a claim has been approved. If a two-year Benefit Period is listed on a disability policy, for example, the insurer may send monthly payments only until the insured has received benefits for a total of 24 months, after which payments stop even if the person is still unable to work. The Benefit Period is separate from the Elimination Period (the waiting time before payments begin).
