Cost Of Insurance

Definition

Cost Of Insurance (COI): The portion of a Canadian life or health policy premium that is specifically allocated to pay for the insurer’s actual risk of providing the benefit. In other words, COI is the money the company needs to cover the likelihood that it will have to pay a claim on your behalf for that year. The COI does not include policy fees, administrative expenses, or any investment or savings component built into permanent life insurance—it is strictly the “price tag” for the pure insurance protection the policy offers you during the given period.
