Successor Beneficiary

Definition

Successor Beneficiary (in Canadian insurance): A person, charity or trust named by the original beneficiary to receive the policy proceeds after the original beneficiary’s death. It takes effect only if the insured dies while the original beneficiary is still alive; in that event, the original beneficiary’s own heirs or estate do not receive the insurance money—the policy benefit passes directly to the successor beneficiary instead.
