Qualifying Event

Definition


Qualifying Event: In Canadian insurance—particularly in life, critical-illness, long-term-care and disability policies—the specific life-change, health diagnosis or employment status update that the insurer recognizes as sufficient to trigger (i) the start of coverage, (ii) an election for coverage upgrades without medical underwriting, or (iii) the commencement, continuation or suspension of premium payments or benefit payments. Examples include loss of group coverage upon leaving a Canadian employer, marriage, childbirth, diagnosis of a covered critical illness, or termination of employment due to disability, as defined in the policy wording and applicable provincial regulations.
