Hospital Indemnity

Definition

Hospital Indemnity (Canadian context): A supplementary insurance benefit that pays the policy-holder a pre-set amount of cash for every day (or every overnight stay) spent in a hospital because of sickness or injury. The money is sent directly to the insured person—not to the hospital or provincial medicare system—and can be used for any purpose, such as covering parking, meals for family, lost wages, or extra medical expenses not paid by provincial health plans. It is designed to help replace out-of-pocket costs that arise while you’re hospitalized, regardless of what the provincial plan already covers.
