Health Care Directive

Definition

Health Care Directive (Canada): A written, legally recognized document—often called a living will, advance care plan, or advance directive—in which an adult describes the medical treatments they would or would not want if they become mentally incapable of speaking on their own behalf and sets out who has the authority to act on those wishes. It allows insurers, doctors, and substitute decision-makers to follow the person’s instructions (e.g., on life-support, resuscitation, or other interventions) and prevents benefits from being paid or withheld contrary to the individual’s expressed wishes.
