Front-End Load

Definition

Front-End Load: In Canadian insurance, the portion of a policyholder’s first premium that the insurer retains to cover the one-time expenses of issuing and setting up the life or segregated-fund policy—such as underwriting, administration, and agent commissions. Instead of being invested in the policy’s funds, this amount is surrendered to the insurer up-front, reducing the net amount that actually begins working on the policyholder’s behalf from day one.
