Extended Health Care

Definition

Extended Health Care (EHC) – In Canadian insurance, any insured health services that are outside the scope of publicly funded provincial/territorial health insurance plans (Medicare). These plans supplement Medicare by covering everyday and ongoing items such as prescription medications, semi-private or private hospital rooms, vision care, paramedical services (e.g., physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, psychology), medical equipment, and emergency travel health benefits. Coverage may be provided through employer group benefits, individual policies, retiree plans, or student plans, and typically involves annual or lifetime maximums, deductibles, and co-insurance percentages.
