Exclusion Rider

Definition

Exclusion Rider—A formal amendment attached to an individual life, disability, critical-illness, or health-insurance policy that specifically removes coverage for one or more named conditions, body parts, treatments, or activities. Issued by the insurer and accepted by the policy owner at the time of underwriting or policy amendment, the rider overrides the base policy and remains in force for as long as the contract is active or the exclusion is lifted by a subsequent removal rider. Premiums are generally discounted to reflect the reduced risk assumed by the insurer.
