Conversion Privilege

Definition

Conversion Privilege (Canadian Insurance): A contractual feature that allows the insured person to change an existing group or individual life and/or health insurance policy to a new, individual life and/or health insurance policy issued by the same insurance company—without having to provide new medical evidence or answer health questions—during a limited time window that is specifically defined in the policy or in provincial insurance regulations. Benefits, coverage levels, and premiums may change after conversion, and the new policy continues regardless of the insured person’s age, health status, or employment status at the time of conversion.
