Certificate Of Insurance

Definition

Certificate Of Insurance (COI): A short, standardized document—usually one or two pages—issued by an insurer or licensed broker that summarizes the key facts of an active Canadian policy (most commonly commercial general liability, automobile, or property coverage). It names who is insured, what risks are covered (in broad terms), the dollar limits of coverage, effective and expiry dates in Eastern or Pacific time as applicable, and any third party who must be formally listed as having protection under the policy. While it serves as quick proof that coverage is currently in force and satisfies contracts, tenders, landlords, or regulatory bodies across Canada, it is only a snapshot and does not change the actual terms, conditions, or exclusions contained in the full policy wording.
