Boilerplate Language

Definition

Boilerplate Language – Canadian Insurance
Pre-written, standardized wording that insurers are legally required or have historically chosen to print verbatim on every policy, endorsement or explanatory document issued in Canada. Found almost word-for-word on millions of contracts, this text is rarely tailored to an individual customer and covers matters such as statutory conditions (e.g., from provincial Insurance Acts), general exclusions, cancellation procedures or subrogation rights. While the language may appear repetitive or legalistic, its purpose is to ensure nationwide compliance with federal and provincial regulations, create uniformity across insurers, and make coverage and obligations predictable for courts, regulators and consumers.
