Assignment

Definition

Assignment: In Canadian insurance, an assignment is the legal transfer, in whole or in part, of the policy owner’s rights or benefits under an insurance policy to another party (individual, financial institution, corporation, or trust). Once the insurer accepts or records the assignment, the new party (called the assignee) acquires the specified rights—such as the right to receive policy proceeds, loans, or cash values—while the original owner (the assignor) keeps any rights not expressly transferred. Most Canadian insurers require a properly executed “assignment form” or “deed of assignment,” and irrevocable assignments normally need the written consent of the assignee before they can be cancelled or altered.
