Annuitant

Definition

Annuitant: The individual who is designated to receive, or whose life expectancy is used to calculate, payments from an annuity contract issued by a Canadian insurer. The annuitant can be the person who originally purchased the annuity, or another party named by the purchaser, but their lifespan (or other triggering criteria such as a fixed term) determines how long the insurer must make income payments. In registered products such as RRSPs or RRIFs that become annuities, the annuitant must also meet Canada Revenue Agency eligibility rules to preserve the plan’s tax-deferred status.
