Waiver Of Premium Disability

Waiver of Premium Disability

A rider or benefit commonly attached to Canadian life insurance policies that excuses the policyholder from paying premiums if they become totally and permanently disabled before a specified age (often age 65).

To qualify, the disability must typically meet the insurer’s definition—usually inability to perform any occupation for which the policyholder is suited by education, training, or experience—and persist beyond a waiting period (commonly 3 to 6 months, with proof of disability required).

Once approved, the insurance company pays the premiums directly, keeping the full policy coverage, cash values, and death benefits intact without lapse, until the disability ends, the policyholder reaches the waiver age limit, or the policy matures/terminates.

This protects families from losing vital coverage during prolonged illness or injury, and is governed by provincial insurance regulations with variations by insurer.
