Adverse Selection

Definition

Adverse Selection (Canadian insurance): The tendency for people who know they are more likely to make a claim to be the ones most inclined to buy or keep a policy, while those who expect few or no claims choose to remain uninsured or drop coverage. This imbalance can force an insurer in Canada to pay out more than it priced for, potentially leading to higher premiums for everyone or making the product unavailable.
